Completed in the spring of 1999 at a total cost of £615k this project represents the culmination of 13 years of dedication and fundraising by the local community. It offers recreational facilities to both locals and visitors and boasts possibly the best performing space outside a dedicated theatre anywhere in the highlands.
The foyer provides access to all other areas of the building and the underfloor heating ensures that this, like the rest of the building, is always a pleasant place to visit.
This is also a valuable display area and with a slate floor is ideal as a bar area during social events.
The main hall provides a perfect venue for a whole range of entertainment including local ceilidhs and dances especially during the summer months. It can comfortably accomodate 200 people and enjoys near perfect acoustics with a reverberation time of 0.92 seconds. It is also equipped for a variety of games.
The library is open twice on Wednesdays from 10.00am to 1.00pm and 6.00pm to 8.00pm. Tea and coffee are on sale in the lounge during morning library hours and the Coigach Quilt is also on display here. This room is used for meetings, small social gatherings and music sessions.
The full size table in the snooker room is charged by the hour via a coin meter. It can be booked in advance – details available locally.
This room was also designed as a display area and has been used to great effect for a number of exhibitions and is used during the summer months as a gallery for local artists.
Contrary to an article by Reiner Luyken published in the Sunday Times,
no European Money was used to fund this project.
A correction was subsequently published by the paper to this effect.
